Law Firm Training Sessions (MCLE)
HRI has CLE's scheduled for 9/14/2011, 12/7/2011, and 3/28/2012. To sign up, please email Zainab Abdulqader, Volunteer Coordinator, and provide your name, phone number, and the date of the CLE you'd like to attend.
HRI provides training for legal professionals in individual and group settings. We have conducted training sessions with many firms, including:

Human Rights Initiative provides the following training programs to law firms:

Basic Political Asylum Representation. The training is available to attorneys in Dallas and Houston and can take place in either location. The overall objective of the Basic Political Asylum Representation program is to introduce potential volunteer attorneys to the fundamentals of representing a person seeking asylum before the Bureau for Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Executive Office for Immigration Review or the Board of Immigration Appeals. Since most of the attorneys attending do not have any formal experience in immigration law, the training session provides an opportunity to inform the attendees about the nature of asylum work and pro bono opportunities available. Attorneys attending the training will receive two MCLE credit hours with 0.5 ethics.

Child Immigrant Training. This training is available to attorneys in Dallas. The overall objective of the Child Immigrant Training is to introduce potential volunteer attorneys to the fundamentals of representing a child seeking immigration relief in the United States, including: Asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, U visa, and the Violence Against Women Act. Since most of the attorneys attending do not have any formal experience in immigration law, the training session provides an opportunity to inform the attendees about the types of relief immigrant children may be eligible for and the pro bono opportunities available. Attorneys attending the training will receive two MCLE credit hours with 0.5 ethics.

Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Training. This training is available to attorneys in Dallas. The overall objective of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Training is to introduce potential volunteer attorneys to the fundamentals of representing a victim of domestic violence married to a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident. It will discuss the filing standard, including good faith/bona fide relationship, battery or extreme cruelty during the marriage, and good moral character. The training session provides an opportunity to inform the attendees about the nature of VAWA case work and pro bono opportunities available. Attorneys attending the training will receive two MCLE credit hours with 0.5 ethics.
