Interpreter + Translator
Policies and Training Volunteers in this program report to the Administrative Assistant. Trainings are held quarterly and the volunteer should contact HRI to make a reservation for the training. Interpreters and translators are expected to possess strong written and oral communication skills in English and in the language(s) they will translate. Volunteers should have a fluent grasp of the language. This is a chance for the volunteer to use their language skills, but not to learn them. Interpreters are expected to arrive on time for any appointments. Volunteers should contact HRI as soon as possible if they need to cancel an appointment for any reason. If HRI is unable to find another interpreter on short notice, the volunteer may be asked to contact the client in order to communicate this with the client and reschedule. A clear and accurate account of the client's situation is of the utmost importance in proving their case. All questions and responses must be relayed, and the volunteer should never try to fill in the gaps or answer the question for the client. Translators are asked to keep any deadlines in mind as they translate important documents. Also, please contact an HRI representative if any help is needed when translating "legalese." If a volunteer is translating a document from home or from their office that contains a client's personal information, appropriate steps must be taken to secure the privacy and confidentiality of the client. Failure to do so will result in removal from the program and could result in legal action.
