2008 Arthur C. Helton Human Rights Award
Human Rights Initiative of North Texas has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 Arthur C. Helton Human Rights Award from the American Immigration Lawyers Association. The award was established in 1983 "To Recognize Outstanding Service in Advancing the Cause of Human Rights". It was renamed in 2003 to honor Arthur Helton, who died that year in the bombing of the United Nations Headquarters in Bagdad. This is AILA's highest award in the area of human rights. This award is particularly meaningful to HRI because Arthur Helton was a giant in the legal community, dedicating his career to refugees and asylum seekers. He created the first pro bono asylum program in the United States, which served as a model for HRI's Volunteer Attorney Program. "This is an enormous honor and validation of the work we do at HRI on a daily bases. We are grateful for this honor and deeply grateful for the support of the many donors and foundations who have made our work possible". - Cannon Flowers, CEO for Human Rights Initiative For more information, go to https://www.aila.org/content/default.aspx?docid=25779
