Cannon Flowers

CannonFlowers08Cannon joined HRI in March 2002 after serving 23 years with Texas Instruments. He joined HRI as the Chief Operating Officer and served in that capacity for more than three years. In November 2005 he became Chief Executive Officer, filling the position from Co-founder Betsy Healy. Cannon has brought an in-depth level of understanding of human rights issues as well as a wealth of business and management experience to Human Rights Initiative. He has applied a "for-profit" business model to a non-profit organization, with management through performance metrics. Cannon has completed Executive Education in "Performance Measurement for Effective Management of Nonprofit Organizations" at Harvard University, JFK School of Government.

While at Texas Instruments, Cannon served in various key financial management positions that took him to Italy, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and many other countries.

Under Cannon's leadership since 2005, some of the successes HRI has enjoyed:

  • Received Texas State-wide recognition by receiving the 2007 State Bar of Texas Pro Bono Agency of the Year Award,
  • Mayoral Proclamation, City of Dallas, Texas, Mayor Tom Leppert - in recognition of HRI as Pro Bono Agency of the Year by the State Bar of Texas,
  • 2008 Arthur C. Helton Award from the American Immigration Lawyers (AILA) Association - AILA's highest award in advancing the cause of human rights,
  • Accredited by the Board of Immigration Appeals/U.S. Department of Justice which is the highest administrative body in the United States for interpreting and applying immigration laws,
  • HRI's Pro bono attorney program has grown to more than 100 pro bono lawyers contributing additional $1.9M in legal services to the clients of HRI,
  • Expanded HRI core services to provide assistance to a greater population in need through HRI's Women & Children Program,
  • Organization financial assets have grown 225% since 2005 ($0.8M to.$1.8M),
  • Annual revenue (cash or non in-kind) has grown 267% since 2005 ($300K to $800K), while maintaining strict cost control, even with program expansion.
  • Entered a major joint research project with the University of Texas at Dallas, funded by The Overbrook Foundation, to understand the successes of HRI's process and workplace cultures.  Then use that research to provide other service providers across the United States with proven methods to assist those who have been victims of human rights abuses
  • Developed collaborative and structured programs with The University of North Texas and Southern Methodist University to provide intern opportunities and possible careers for future human rights advocates,
  • HRI certified as an environmentally sustainable organization by EarthPeople LLC.
