environmental sustainability policy
HRI Environmental Sustainability Policy Since 2000, when the Human Rights Initiative was first launched, financial transparency has been a priority. We strive to be fully accountable to the community on which we depend to provide the financial resources we need to fulfill our mission. In early 2007, we launched a sustainability policy, which underscores our commitment to transparency. As a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization operating out of a small office, we are not required by any law to disclose our environmental impact. However, as a matter of social leadership, we choose to recognize that we as a group do have an environmental footprint and we have made a choice to reduce it. We issued our first annual sustainability report for 2006, which shows how we at HRI seek to balance economic, environmental and social performance. Our sustainability policy encourages the following: - To strive for accountability and transparency in all business practices
- To share our economic, environmental and social performance with our stakeholders
- To reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change and pollution
- To create a clean, healthy indoor environment for our staff and clients
- To maintain and promote our employee-driven recycling program
- To target cost-reduction opportunities in energy use and office supplies
- To drive improvement in our own performance
Our mission continues to be the promotion of international human rights through local service to refugees and immigrants who have suffered human rights abuses. In demonstrating environmental and social responsibility, we are simply striving to do our jobs in a way that will help build a cleaner, healthier community for our generous supporters, our clients and our staff.
