Legal Training

Throughout the year, HRI hosts CLEs for lawyers and those in the legal profession in individual or group settings.

Our next planned training is a comprehensive in-house CLE: “Taking a Case with HRI: VAWA, SIJS, U-Visa, and Asylum.”  This course will count for 1.5 CLE hours including 0.25 ethics hours. Please bring a bag lunch.

Our next training is scheduled for Wednesday, June 7 2017 from 12:00-1:30pm.

If you would like to begin taking cases with Human Rights Initiative as a new attorney, or if you haven’t taken a case with us in a while, please join us!  For more information, please email Elisabeth Hagberg.

If you would like to attend, please send your RSVP directly to Elisabeth Hagberg.

Human Rights Initiative provides the following training programs to law firms:

  • Basic Asylum Representation: The training is available to attorneys in Dallas and Houston and can take place in either location. Training will introduce potential volunteer attorneys to the fundamentals of representing a person seeking asylum before the Bureau for Citizenship and Immigration Services; the Executive Office for Immigration Review; or the Board of Immigration Appeals. Since most of the attorneys attending do not have any formal experience in immigration law, the session informs attendees about the nature of asylum work and available pro bono opportunities. Attorneys will receive 1-1.5 CLE credit hours (depending on the length of the presentation) with 0.25 ethics.
  • Child Immigrant Training: This training is available to attorneys in Dallas. Training will introduce potential volunteer attorneys to the fundamentals of representing a child seeking immigration relief in the United States, including: Asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), U-Visa, and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The session informs attendees about the types of relief immigrant children may be eligible for and available pro bono opportunities. Attorneys will receive 1-1.5 CLE credit hours (depending on the length of the presentation) with 0.25 ethics.
  • Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Training: This training is available to attorneys in Dallas. Training will introduce potential volunteer attorneys to the fundamentals of representing a victim of domestic violence married to a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident. It will discuss the filing standard, including good faith/bona fide relationship, battery or extreme cruelty during the marriage, and good moral character. The session informs attendees about the nature of VAWA case work and available pro bono opportunities. Attorneys will receive 1-1.5 CLE credit hours (depending on the length of the presentation) with 0.25 ethics.
  • U-Visa Training: This training is available to attorneys in Dallas. The training will give an overview on the background and history of the U-Visa. Training is to introduce potential volunteer attorneys to the fundamentals of representing a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes. It will discuss the filing standard, including victims of a qualifying violent crime, assistance with the prosecution of the case against the perpetrator and extreme mental or physical harm. The session informs attendees about the nature of U-Visa case work and available pro bono opportunities. Attorneys will receive 1-1.5 CLE credit hours (depending on the length of the presentation) with 0.25 ethics.

Please note, HRI can do any combination of the above training sessions. If your firm is interested in arranging a training session with HRI, please contact us or email Elisabeth Hagberg.
