Attorney, Asylum Program

mgonzalez@hrionline.org

Martha Gonzalez joined HRI in June 2011 in the role of Asylum Attorney. She represents asylum seekers and asylees from all over the world, at all legal stages. She also provides support to volunteer attorneys who represent asylum seekers through our Asylum Program.

Martha first began working with asylum seekers when she volunteered with the California Asylum Representation Clinic. After she graduated law school, she worked for the Department of Homeland Security and adjudicated asylum applications for the Los Angeles Asylum Office. She traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, and Cuba for overseas refugee processing. She also conducted asylum pre-screening interviews at several detention facilities. While working for the Los Angeles Asylum Office, she was selected for the USCIS Office of the Chief Counsel/Asylum detailee program and counseled USCIS personnel on issues involving immigration related adjudications.
