Martha
Gonzalez joined HRI in June 2011 in the role of Asylum Attorney. She
represents asylum seekers and asylees from all over the world, at all
legal stages. She also provides support to volunteer attorneys who
represent asylum seekers through our Asylum Program.
Martha first
began working with asylum seekers when she volunteered with the
California Asylum Representation Clinic. After she graduated law
school, she worked for the Department of Homeland Security and
adjudicated asylum applications for the Los Angeles Asylum Office. She
traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, and Cuba for overseas refugee processing.
She also conducted asylum pre-screening interviews at several detention
facilities. While working for the Los Angeles Asylum Office, she was
selected for the USCIS Office of the Chief Counsel/Asylum detailee
program and counseled USCIS personnel on issues involving immigration
related adjudications.
